May ended up being quite a productive month for me craft-wise, and I’m pleased to say I’ve been able to tick off some of my #2018makenine list!
On my list was the Molly dress from Sew Over It, which I got with the Comic Relief Crafternoon magazine last year. It’s also available as a PDF book from Sew Over It’s website.
Details
- Pattern name: Molly
- Variation/Style: Dress version without the sleeve pieces
- Design House: Sew Over It
- Size I made: 12
Fabric
A knit fabric I got when I went to Hong Kong – it is quite thick and would probably make a nice jumper or cardigan!
Difficulty
For a knit fabric pattern, I found it pretty straightforward. Even the neckband went in alright although it will depend on the fabric you use as you may need to adjust as the pattern highlights.
Clarity
I found the instructions for this make nice and simple. The only part where I almost slipped up was on the neckband, where I almost stitched it on with a 1.5cm seam allowance when it asks for a 1cm allowance, but that is my own oversight as it does tell you!
Fit
I made a straight size 12. I didn’t include the sleeves because it’s quite muggy where I live and I get more use out of short sleeved makes.
Design
I found this make really comfortable to wear. I think it probably may depend on your fabric choice, but with my fabric, it’s very casual and does not cling which is great. As I didn’t add the sleeve pieces, I can’t comment on the design of these although I like the idea of the stripes going the other way.
Time Taken
I completed this dress in just over a day as I let it hang overnight before hemming (and I’m glad I did because it did drop).
Conclusion
I am happy with this make but a bit frustrated because I added stabilising tape to the shoulder seam and it’s made it ruched up a bit here. I probably should have just left it on the actual shoulder section or just omitted it completely. The pattern doesn’t tell you to add stabilising tape – I just added it as I thought it might be needed to make it last longer. Apart from that, it’s great and I’d like to make another.
